How to play

Redactle hides a Wikipedia article behind black bars. Guess a word and every place it appears is revealed. Find the title and you've solved the puzzle.
A few common words — the, and, of, is — stay visible, so you can read the shape of a sentence before you know any of its content.
The redacted title tells you how many words you're after and how long each one is. A one-word title narrows things down fast.
Fewer guesses is a better score. The game also tracks your time and your accuracy — the share of your guesses that revealed at least one word.

Daily — one article a day, the same one for everybody.
Unlimited — keep playing random articles for as long as you like.
Collections — themed sets of articles to work through.
Redactle JR — shorter, gentler articles, aimed at younger players.
Multiplayer — race a friend through the same article.

Capitalisation, accents and ligatures are ignored, so Encyclopædia and encyclopaedia count as the same guess.
Related forms of a word are grouped together, so guessing one form will usually reveal the others.
Hyphenated words also count as their individual parts.
If a guess should have been accepted and wasn't, tell me about it — that's a fixable bug, and reporting it is the fastest way to get it fixed.

Where do the articles come from?: Every puzzle is a real Wikipedia article, taken as it is and hidden — nothing is rewritten.
Does everybody get the same puzzle?: Yes — the daily puzzle is the same for every player, which is what makes scores worth comparing. A new one arrives each day. If you'd rather not wait, unlimited and collections are always there.
Why wasn't my guess accepted?: Usually because the word genuinely isn't in the article. But a guess that clearly should have counted is a real bug — see guesses and answers above, and report it so it gets fixed for everyone.
Is my progress saved?: Yes. Games are stored in your browser, so you can close the tab mid-puzzle and pick it up where you left off. Clearing your browser data clears them too.
Do I need an account?: No — everything is playable without one. An account is for keeping your stats and streak when you switch device or browser.
Can I change the language, theme or text size?: All of them live in Settings in the top bar. Redactle is playable in several languages, and each language has its own puzzles.
The page looks broken or won't load: Try a refresh first. If it keeps happening, report it and mention your browser and device — that detail is usually what makes it reproducible.
